Tell us a bit about yourself.
Craft enthusiast & a lover of Indian textiles, that’s me . I run a design studio based out of Bangalore called Studio T (Labels include Aalo & Incy Wincy).
How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?
Founded in 2013, Aalo brings in a blend of refined designs and impeccable workmanship. Aalo-Woman celebrates the new-age woman and is committed to unveil her contemporary progressive personality. At Aalo, we combine traditional fabrics with craftsmanship to create an ensemble that embodies the values of the modern woman. Our design studio creates Sarees & Stoles using natural fabrics like silk, linen & cotton. The choice of natural fabrics is synonymous with the sub-tropical climate & the rich textile heritage of our country, India. Our signature collection is a unique blend of the famous Kasavusarees from Kerala and Aari embroidery from Kashmir. Our designs are traditional, yet appealing to the taste palette of a modern woman.
Aalo-Home offers creative designs and customized solutions for Home furnishings and Lifestyle products. Our product range at the moment includes decorative cushion covers, styles ranging from modern to classic which are updated and evolved every season. We use techniques like applique, embroidery, layering etc.
Incy Wincy is our design label for hand appliquéd T Shirts for children. Hand embroidery is added for detailing and texture. Incy Wincy uses contemporary design aesthetics to promote traditional hand applique techniques. We incorporate our countries rich source of block printed and hand woven fabrics. We engage the skills of local women, train them in our studio and help them adapt to set standards of skill and aesthetics; thus (in a small way) providing them with enriching livelihoods.
Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
This is going to be our 2nd exhibition in Chennai. We had received an overwhelming response when we took Incy Wincy & Aalo to the beautiful & culturally rich city, Chennai in 2014. This year, we are introducing Dupattas in cotton. Also introducing our brand new collection – Noor, of light weight Tissue Silk sarees, which is a celebration of light though simple elements and contemporary motifs. The gossamer nature of these fabrics allow for effortless attiring and style. Our little clients for Incy Wincy can look forward to our new collection of Peek a Bootees which have interesting placement details at the back of the tee as well.
Can you describe your work place / space?
I work from our home studio. I must say, every day is a wonderful riot of colours& fabrics! Our team of women from around the locality create beautiful products by adding details like hand embroidery, buttons, sequins etc.
What is a typical day at STUDIO T like.
We love what we do & that’s the best part. Every single day brings in a new challenge & new perspective.
What/who inspires you? Or how do you find inspiration?
Children are my biggest source of inspiration. They are sometimes the best at being the most original and out of the box in terms of design thinking. When mothers write in; talking about the big reactions from the little ones, it is indeed a pleasure and an inspiration to create even better, going forward.
Can you describe your creative process and what is the most rewarding part of the creative process for you?
I am blessed to be born in a country with the richest source of traditional textiles and craft heritage. Satisfied customers who appreciate the effort we put into every piece keeps us going.
What’s the best thing about being a designer?
I think the best thing about working in this field as a crafter is the enriching experience of working with textiles and its various nuances. I am surprised often, with new discoveries and important lessons to imbibe from this varied and priceless heritage of our country. We provide employment to a few of our local women and teach them an important skill. Most of them are school/college dropouts.
What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?
Go for it….there is a growing demand for handwork & hard work. If you have an idea…and you yourself are convinced…there should be no looking back. Start small & dream big!
Anything exciting on the cards for the coming months?
Looking forward to introducing T-Shirts for adults, owing to demands for crafted tees in adult sizes.
