Meet The Maker: Karunya Rajan, Fashion Designer

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Karunya Rajan – born and brought up in Mettupalayam , a small town situated between Ooty and Coimbatore. After getting myself an engineering degree followed by a business administration degree , I began to realise that I was not up for anything that had to do with engineering and desk jobs! If someone asks me how I got in to designing clothes , I still don’t have an answer for that . My current profile, apart from looking after my family business  is , I am the owner + the Creative Director + Designer of Kalki Design Studio.

How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?

Kalki was launched in 2012 and growing up and expanding steadily from then. What I do in Kalki is very simple , I try to create wearable clothing in clear lines , non fuzzy , minimal , effortless styles.

Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.

We recently launched our Spring Summer collection at Coimbatore. We are now retailing our collection at Anonym , Hyderabad and at White Brick Wall, Goa and soon at Sugar, Surat. For the By the Hand , From the Heart Artisan Market , we are introducing few new patterns and there is also our new line of wired totes to be introduced at the market!

What is a typical day at Kalki like.

There is no  typical day at Kalki ; we usually start with  allocating the jobs for our in-house tailors , checking the stock , we reply to our emails and handle our appointments if any for the day. We  keep trying new patterns every 2 weeks and it takes quite sometime to get it right.  A day at Kalki is , both planned and sometimes chaotic too!

What/who inspires you? Or how do you find inspiration?

It might sound cliche , but everything happening around me inspires me . There are some days where there ‘s nothing inspiring happening or nothing seems like working out . But then, there are some days where you just cant stop!

My clothes are inspired from fabrics. Indian Textiles inspire me. The Love for the fabric, led me to what I am doing today! There might also be a another reason for my fascination for textiles;  having been raised in a family where you see your grandfather wearing Kadhi every other day and the father getting lovely saris for the mother; which by some magic still remains and smells the same of how it was years ago; knowingly or unknowingly these things has influenced my mind and might have led me to doing what I do today!

What/who inspires you? Or how do you find inspiration?

There is no structured creative process that I follow, I am more on the spontaneous side! Ah , the rewarding part in designing or creating actually happens at two places ! One is when the idea conceived in your mind takes shape and comes out the way you want it and the other part is when somebody can understand what Kalki is and can speak the same language as you in terms of design and ideology!

What’s the best thing about being a crafter / designer?

The best thing about anything associated with being a designer is , basically its where you get to be you , unleash the creativity in you , and you know there are rules to be broken , limitless thinking and where everything from your mind and heart work together and is in sync! And top it at all , you get to create something , which does give you a high!

What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?

It’s just not about selling , its about the satisfaction you get , when someone buys from your product . Accept and Appreciation – we will be needing it big time.

Listen , on why they love your product and what more you can add on to it. Everything is not about making money , but it is  the Happiness you get when you are able to do what you want to and also be good at it !

Anything exciting on the cards for the coming months?

Look out for our wired totes ,  personally I love them , and also we are excited about launching our own line of Home Accessories , soon ! And yes , we have our new patterns of clothing coming up soon 🙂
