Tell us a bit about yourself.

parulI am Parul Khanna, a corporate lawyer turned artist & entrepreneur. I love art and I am a self-taught artist. After working for a few years in corporate law with law firms in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, I finally decided to unleash my latent desire to be an artist & entrepreneur, so quit corporate law and started Coral Charm.

How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?

I have created lamps which are very different from the often interesting, but predictable forms of lamps available in the market. I conceived the idea of making these handcrafted lamps and fairy lights about a year ago, and after establishing the supply side for raw materials, started making these products from February 2015.

At Coral Charm, we make a wide variety of illuminated floral bouquets and fairy string lights. Being floral bouquets, they not only serve as night lamps but also look beautiful as décor items in the day. These are a fabulous addition to any interiors, parties or events.

This product line is inspired by European Fairy Lights concept, and has strong relevancein the Indian context where bare LED string lights has become the de-facto outdoors lighting option during festive season or otherwise. I decided to transform the bare LED string lights into an amazing interior décor / lighting option, by creating high quality LED fairy lights with the use of handcrafted ornaments and designs.

Coral Charm fairy lights are sure to brighten up the rooms/ walls/ railings/ patios, wherever they are placed. Available in myriad colors and designs, they are fantastic for parties, or for mood lighting at home. Being battery operated, and not dependent on power sockets, one gets all the flexibility to place them anywhere. They can be hung from doorways, patios, windows, curtain rods, or swirled around railings, dressing tables, bed back rests, or spread on lawn or hedges, or even be placed in a planter as a center table piece.

Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.

Coral Charm shall be presenting its illuminated floral bouquets and fairy lights at, By Hand From The Heart.

Crystal Flowers Branch Lights: This variety has flowers made of premium quality acrylic which shine like crystals. They lend a very elegant and sophisticated feel, and come in vibrant colors. With the added convenience of running them on batteries, you can use them as table center pieces or place them at locations that do not have power socket available.

Fabric Flower Branch Lights: This variety has flowers made of nylon stocking fabric. Available in bright and eye catching color combinations as also pastel shades, these allow for a mind boggling variety in colors and designs to suit your taste.

Crystal garland string lights: Different shapes and sizes of acrylic crystal beads are carefully twisted with the wire and wrapped around the LED string light to form an elegant crystal garland.

Fabric floral string lights: Stocking fabric is skillfully stretched over a wire-petal structure to form a distinct floral shape. The flexible petals can be opened or closed to change the look or diffusion of the light.

Can you describe your work place / space?

We are a very small team right now and based out of Bangalore. Most of my artisans are women, and share the love of working in a field we truly enjoy. For most, this is a means of becoming financially independent or economically contributing to their households, and the pride in being associated with an organization.

What is a typical day at CORAL CHARM like.

IMG_1551 (1)Apart from routine activities of tracking and fulfilling online orders, the part I look forward to the most is where I actually work with my team in handcrafting various products, and exploring the possibility of new designs.

What/who inspires you? Or how do you find inspiration?

From my childhood, I have been passionate about art and craft. There is no particular source of inspiration for me. I derive inspiration from the smallest of events, experiences, or observations.

Can you describe your creative process and what is the most rewarding part of the creative process for you?

I trust my creative intuition. If I have a basic idea in my head I’d quickly start making it. Once I finalize the design for a specific product, I do a test run with a sample to ensure the final product clicks with audience, before I go ahead with production. The most satisfying point is when the lamp/fairy light is switched on after 1/2 days long efforts, and the most rewarding part is to see glint in the eyes of a customer appreciating our lamps.

What’s the best thing about being a crafter / designer?

The best part is the endless scope of creativity and the freedom to give expression to your thoughts and translate it into a design and a finished product, which is appreciated by others.

What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?

If you have a good idea and you love what you do, then start small with small investment and test the market with it. Based on the response you get take the plunge.

Anything exciting on the cards for the coming months?

In the coming months, I plan to increase the product portfolio. There are many ideas in my mind that I am waiting to experiment with. In the longer run, I am looking to build an innovative and trustworthy brand in the domain of contemporary handicrafts.

Parul Khanna will showcase her works, at the By Hand, From The Heart Artisan & Farmers Market | 7- 8 August 2015 | 10 a.m – 8 p.m | Hanu Reddy Residences, 41/19, Poes Garden, Teynampet, Chennai.
