The Bodhi tree is a metaphor for life and work for this talented lady who was born in Gaya. Samoolam [Sanskrit word meaning Collective roots] is the brand by Usha Prajapati that began its journey from her fathers’ garage in Gaya. Slowly she began joining hands with women from Bihar and New Delhi and today Samoolam is spreading its wings far and wide.
Hailing from a family of six children, Usha, who is the youngest has set up a nest for herself in Delhi. Her words of inspiration are found in a Fridge magnet- “There are women who make things better, simply by showing up. There are women who make things happen. There are women who make their way. There are women who make a difference. And women who make us smile. There are women of wit and wisdom who through strength and courage make it through. There are women who change the world everyday, women like you.” By Ashley Rice.
What do you find in Samoolam? Beautiful hand-crocheted lifestyle products- Crochet Jewelry, Belts, Bags & pouches available in a wonderful range of colors, patterns and designs. all of which are made by Usha and a group of talented women. If you thought one had to be able to converse fluently in English to create a space and have heard turns, you are in for a surprise. Usha cant speak much English, but her drive, confidence and honesty floored the panel at NID and announced to the world she is different. So much so that she was offered English lessons by her campus and today she holds her own at various events. Samoolam has a website, and the products are today available across the globe-Netherlands & UK apart from Ahmedabad and Thekkady in India. Now that is reaching for greater heights indeed.
When asked what Samoolam stands for, all she had to share was “creating Authentic, Handmade, Beautiful, Affordable and Quality Designer products by empowering women.” Well, that does sum up Usha and Samoolam in a sentence!
Samoolam will be at the By Hand, From The Heart Artisan & Farmers Market.
