Tell us a bit about yourself.
Gita & I (Gyana) are accessory designers with many years of merchandising experience; over the last 2 years we have been working with the local artisans in Puducherry to create hand-crafted, fashion and lifestyle products for the label Vasthra.
How long have you been into designing and creating?
Designing has always been a part of us, and our love for ethnic fabrics, propelled us to study and explore textile designing. We have been working as merchandiser and designer for home decor for many years before stepping into Vasthra.
Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
We are currently designing accessories to compliment our handcrafted footwear range.
What is currently inspiring you?
Community and Connection. Handmade pieces are infused with energy and creativity of the artist and the makers passion for their craft. In making our designs we come in contact with many people, Ideas, materials and it all comes together to create a piece. The people and their stories behind every step in creation of our designs inspire us.
How do you get around creative blocks?
Designing with a friend, support and a new perspective is always readily at hand !
Can you describe your creative process and what is the most rewarding part of the creative process for you?
Anything can spark a, idea and lead us to a new design or product. It all happens fast and we visualize our finished piece with all its aspects. We are very hands on, everything is picked and put together as we go with the process of making the pieces and the most rewarding aspect is when the physical product is ‘as it is’ to what we visualized. Bringing together design and function.
What’s the best thing about being a designer?
The mind of a designer, is beautiful. Its all about, perspective. To a designer everything is a design… a smudge on the floor, hidden shapes in the woodwork. Being a designer itself, is a reward.
What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?
If you can create something, do it. Pursue it. Sales is bound to happen to well designed products.
You have participated in an earlier edition of By Hand From The Heart; what was the BHFTH experience and what have you observed?
The earlier edition was a very good platform for us to meet a lot of interesting people; this inspired us to do more in product development & widening our range.
Chennai – your association with this city. Your observation of the Chennai’s shopper.
Chennai is home. A place that is warm, inspiring and allows you to be who you are.
What’s up next for you?
We are always on the lookout to create contemporary products with ethnic materials and bringing out the people behind our products so the buyers can see the hands that touch the products they take home.
