I am Ramya Harimadhavan, a designer of leather accessories. I started my career as a HR Manager; but have always wanted to become an entrepreneur. My marriage got me closer to this entrepreneurial dream. My husband runs a leather business and is a designer too. With a  flair for design and a long standing dream at heart; HYDES STUDIO became a reality.

How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?

I am a designer by passion. As a person I believe shopping brings happiness and helps you to discover yourself. HYDES STUDIO is now a year old. I believe in keeping the design minimalistic and it travels between traditional artisan and modern aesthetics. Our USP is to deliver customised designs for our customers.

Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.

Started with totes, an everyday carry which looks fashionable yet vintage. Gradually experimenting different styles and now we have leather bags catering 18 to infinity. At By Hand, From The Heart -the silhouettes are inspired by everyday totes, bucket, slings, duffle, wallets and many more will be showcased.

What is a typical day at “HYDES STUDIO” like.

I would say it’s a mishmash of devising and chaos. Catching up to complete the work on time. Trying out different leather patterns and color which complements the model. We are active on social media ; Facebook and Instagram keeps us busy in promos & order queries.  Much time is spent addressing to inquires and customer support.

What/who inspires you? Or how do you find inspiration?

My dad! I have always seen him work hard with a genuine interest in all that he pursues. It’s my turn now!! My husband  too has been a great pillar of strength; succors me with better understanding of leather and designing.

Can you describe your creative process and what is the most rewarding part of the creative process for you?

We start as a blank page and put together ideas that inspire us and ensure that the design has a utility value attached to it. Handcrafted by local artisans in our in-house studio, who create limited editions of each design. Each bag is carefully designed and handcrafted out of quality leather.  The joy of holding  a finished product is priceless.

What’s the best thing about being a crafter / designer?

To be yourself! The product reflects the personality of the designer. The opportunity to design the change is out there! Simply love the rush of developing & creating new designs.

What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?

It’s a beautiful feeling and the contentment is priceless. Try to understand what the customer loves and value their feedback. There is always space to progress.

Anything exciting on the cards for the coming months?

We are coming up with a line of men’s leather goods, slim wallets and gym bags. For the women, stylish slings are in the making.
