Tell us a bit about yourself.
The three of us, Vinayak, Aishwarya and Karan have been working together in an advertising agency as a team for a few years now. As all of us have constantly wandering minds, we never really got down to it. We have been talking about starting MonkeyJi for about 3 years now and finally one morning woke up and decided to the plunge and just do it.
How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?
We proudly celebrate all that is Indian, in all its vividness, form, color and joy. We like to think of us as storytellers, sharing our India though different medium. We have been creating for about 10 years now, but it has only been a few weeks since MonkeyJi was born.
Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
We offer a range of products, which have an integral India story and Indian-ness in every design. Our collection includes, notebooks, posters, cushions, coasters, canvas prints and more. Do stop by and say hi to the MonkeyJi tribe.
Can you describe your work place?
Natural light & wood.
What is a typical day at MonkeyJi like.
“Currently surviving a deadline”
What are you most influenced by and how has it inspiring your work?
Monkeyji is inspired by you and me, everything in India a-peels to us. It is inspired by everything that is India. They say, if you can laugh at yourself you will never cease to be amused.
What’s the best thing about being a designer?
The best thing for us is that we are constantly creating and constantly learning. We learn a bit about everything because design requires and allows us to do that.
What would you say to someone thinking about selling their work?
If you are like us and want to do it for the love of it, ask us in a few months. If you have a strategy and plan in action, show us the way. We love to collaborate, let’s talk!
Chennai – your association with this city.
Born. Raised. Proud.
What’s up next for you?
Hahaha! Sell these products in hand! This is no monkey business. We have enjoyed the process of creating so much so that we have not really worked out the economics or our “marketing plan”. We are going with our gut and we hope to get rewarded!
