By Hand From The Heart is a curated Makers Market event in South India. Upcoming Events: 22nd Edition: 2nd – 3rd February '18 in Coimbatore | 23rd Edition: 16th – 17th – February '18 in Chennai.
We first meet Anandaperumal and his wife at an earlier edition of By Hand From The Heart. The couple had come down to Chennai ONLY to visit the event. A quick chat over some mobile pictures of his works; we instantly knew that this was a By Hand story. Two editions later, we are indeed very pleased to introduce you to this very talented coconut shell crafter from Kavin Gallery, Tirunelveli.
A bit about yourself and what you do.
My name is Anandaperumal; I am a coconut shell artist from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. My passion for nature, lead me from the gold refining business to crafting with coconut shells. My deep love for Mother Nature and the urge to craft products that does not pollute the environment got me into crafting with coconut shells. Initially, I I started making coconut shell sculpted jewelry; with all positive feedback and support from friends and family, I built my portfolio; and thats how I started Kavin Gallery.
What’s the most challenging or exciting project you’ve worked on.
Miniature works such as carving Natarajar statue, small ants and letters (tamil) are quite challenging. The most exciting project was a wedding backdrop made completely out of natural waste – dry leaves, natural and eco-friendly scraps. For the wedding backdrops we created a ship appox 20 feet in width with natural scraps from the gardens and streets in and around the wedding premises. It took us almost 10 hours to put this project togther.
Where do you look for inspiration? And what is inspiring you now?
I love travelling… I learn a lot from various people I come across; especially Peter and Ramesh – artists, social workers from Cuckoo movement for children… their works are fascinating.
Describe your work space and what’s it like?
Open terrace & a balcony, that’s my work space. It’s the best place to work along with the chirping of birds and the sounds of nature. Nature inspires the artist in me.
Tell us about your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
We have planned to display coconut shell art work, frames, decorative articles, Jewelry, key chains, lamp shade, wall hangings and wood works.
What’s the best thing about being a craft entrepreneur?
Being a craft entrepreneur has nutured me to work along with nature. It has pushed me to learn and explore more.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten along the way in building your business?
Be devoted to the work you do, learn and create something new, always.
Your advice for aspiring craft entrepreneurs?
Upcoming craft entrepreneurs should come with new creative ideas, take effort in their works and must ensure to be unique from that of others.
