Meet The Maker: Priya Dhar and Ujjal Bhuyan, Neon Store, Bangalore

Meet Priya Dhar and Ujjal Bhuyan, the founders of Neon Store. Based in Bangalore the duo are textile designers from NID, Ahmadabad. Let’s find out about their textile and clothing venture and also find out more about their passion about art, craft and design.

1. A bit about yourself and what you do.

We, Ujjal and Priya, are the founder of Neon Store.Neon Store started as an exploration, a project that was to serve a personal need.  As we prepared for the birth of our first son, Niyor (who by the way inspired the brand!), we found a lack of earthy, natural and simple products for babies. As the birth of our child drew nearer, we hand crafted and painstakingly made little wraps, quilts and garments for the little fellow.

These were so loved by friends and family, that we were soon making them as gifts for everyone having a baby! Till it occurred to us that everyone felt the way we did- that this wasn’t available to us.

Thus, after several years of sampling, perfecting and brainstorming, was born Neon Store, for kids, in 2015.

Soon after, with all the love and encouragement we received, we realized that we must expand the line to include the mamas! As we speak, Neon store is working to launch Neon Store Women- it’s very own women’s wear line.

Our work doesn’t end here. Being textile designers and having a background of art and sculpture, we cannot sit still! We will soon venture into an exclusive line for Home and Art.

2.Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.

Our newest line includes a very classic and clean look, in Black and White, soft muls, layered dresses, soft linens in pastel colours, lace and crochet trims. We design keeping in mind the child. We understand that children like to foremost be comfortable. Making them look good while being comfortable is our job.

Being textile designers, we pay great attention to the way we process our fabrics that make the garment. We are passionate about craft and each of our fabrics is designed with love, whether as a block print, screen print or an embroidery.

3.Where do you look for inspiration? And what is inspiring you now?

There is a lot that inspires us! We love conversational patterns (hence our Cityscape Embroidery and our Toile Print). We love traditional geometric tile patterns. Having worked in a very niche furnishing industry for 15 years, we draw a lot of our design and colour inspiration from there. And of course there is craft, that has an endless repertoire of techniques.

What is inspiring us at Neon Store right now is dry yarns like linens, lace and crochet and hand embroidery.

4.How long does it take to make a collection? What’s involved?

It takes us about 2-3 months to make a complete collection.

It involves planning the look, making mood boards, sketching, sourcing the fabrics, pattern making, sampling, editing, preparing the fabrics whether printed, embroidered or woven, sourcing and finalising trims, planning a production schedule. Post production there is product checking, costing, packaging.

5.Describe your work space and what’s it like?

Our work space is always in a flux. There is a part of it that is very organised, which is our board that has all our schedules, of production, sampling, upcoming shows and deadlines. There is another part which has mounds of fabric and samples. It helps us think when we sit with our fabrics!

6.What’s your favourite pick at Neon Store?

Our favourite pick right now is the Midnight Dress. It uses five different fabrics in black and white, and we like the way it’s come together.

7.What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten along the way in building your business?

To keep at it, consistently, every single day. Things will work and things will not work. The key is to stay focused and keep at it.

8.About Chennai.

We love Chennai for its diversity. It is one of the most colorful city in India. Be it food, culture, art, movie, literature, technology you name it. We always look forward to be in Chennai for its filter coffee.
