By Hand From The Heart is a biannual Makers Market held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
The team at Milagro share in detail about their organic farms, herbs and products. Currently into growing Italian herbs in the valleys of Ooty, rice and other grains in the plains of the south and coconuts and mangoes by the sea, Milagro’s team look to expand their organic product base in India in the near future.
1. Farm to shelf. What’s a typical day at Milagro.
No day is ever the same at Milagro. Being in the initial stages there is a variety of work that needs to be done. Our activities require us to be involved at every stage from the seed to the shelf. From the preparation of the soil to working on the look and feel of the end product, we are at it! We are extremely conscious and transparent about how we function and are therefore very critical of how we grow and source our products. You’re welcome to visit our farms and spend a day or more with us.
2. Tell us about your products that you propose to showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
Milagro is here with a vision to be a sustainable organic foods brand, promoting a community of conscious consumers. Currently growing Italian herbs in the valleys of Ooty, rice and other grains in the plains of the south and coconuts and mangoes by the sea, we look to expand our product base in the near future. At milagro we strive to make sure our products are of high quality, grown in complete harmony with the ways of the planet.
Our Italian herbs, Rosemary , Oregano and Thyme are grown with utmost care on our 30 acre farm in the valleys of Ooty. The herbs are grown without the use of any chemical pesticides or fertilizers making them completely organic. While these herbs can be used in foods they also have a lot of medicinal benefits. Meet us at By the Hand, From the Heart for some fresh and potted herbs as well. Enjoy the flavors of our herbs with our rosemary infused chocolates and crackers.
3. What’s your favourite pick with Milagro?
Our herbs – fresh, dry and potted is definitely what we love and I’m sure you will too. Growing foods that we use in our kitchens, will help establish a connect between the consumer and the farm. Our potted herbs aim to do just this! Take care of the plant, nurture it, use it in your food and suddenly that ingredient will mean so much more.
4. What’s the best thing about being a organic food entrepreneur?
Food is a major part of our lives. When it plays such a big role in society today, it’s important for us to look at how our food is grown, where it is grown and who grows it. Food that we see on the shelf begins as a seed. There is a whole ecosystem that supports its journey to the shelf. While organic foods are healthier and tastier for the consumer, it recognizes and respects the ecosystem that supports its growth. It ensures the health of the seed, soil, farmer and consumer. With the rise of a genetically modified era, the growth of organic farming and food is extremely important. Making this self-sustained eco system depend on a corporation is nothing less than criminal. As an organic food entrepreneur I see this as our responsibility to make a conscious choice about what we eat. There are many people and organizations that are doing some wonderful and successful work in this area. Milagro aims to be a part of this “real” green revolution.
5. About Chennai.
Being born and brought up in Chennai, I see the city growing, not only in size and number, but growing to be a group of aware and conscious consumers. Also with the demanding Chennai palate we see a liking for some authentic Italian foods. With the opening of a number of organic stores in the city we see a shift in the way people are choosing their foods. In this context, we see an opportunity for organic Italian herbs in Namma Chennai!
