Geetanjali of MOHA, Mumbai will be showcasing her works for the second time with BHFTH. We catch up with the designer who loves Chennai for its food and the’s city culture. She shares with us her design inspirations, ongoing projects and her future plans for MOHA.
1. A bit about yourself.
I started off with a career in advertising and digital communication design space for over 10 years. As a self-taught jewellery artist I soon began to turn my design instincts and skills into creating unique designer jewelry. I have always had very strong ideas for ornament designs, and I used draw lot of these designs, motifs, ornament ideas which I knew I would convert them into real tangible piece of work. Moha is my dream project. With help of a family friend I learnt basic techniques of making jewelry, and then things started taking shape. Now designs on paper were being converted to real silver pieces. These are the most fulfilling moments. My prime source of inspiration has always been my travels and meeting different tribes. These memories I later translate into wearable designs. I am also an avid reader and wanderer who equally loves to be with Nature. Crafts and the tribal people are subjects close to my heart.
2. How would you describe what you do; and how long have you been making and creating?
MOHA is a designer jewelry venture. Moha has focus on creating designs which suits our modern day lifestyle as well as traditional aesthetics. Moha is a fusion of the Ethnic & Contemporary. We give emphasis on techniques and styles preserved from Past. We do minimum machine work as handcrafting is what we value. We have been doing this work for 2.5 years now.
3. Why is making important to you?
Because we love our work, and we want to create jewelry which our patrons will pass-on to next generation for it being special piece they always loved.
4. Tell us about your recent works and your proposed showcase at the By Hand, From The Heart.
Many new earrings design and a lots of beautiful tassel necklaces is going to make this times showstopper at BHFH from Moha collection. We are also presenting some new earrings which will traditional motifs to drool upon.
5. Describe your work premises & what is a typical working day, like.
Our studio is an apartment we have rented out around year before when shifted to Thane (Mumbai), the most lovely part of this place was it was love at first sight, this apartment is right on border of wildlife zone called Sanjay Gandhi National Park, The Mountain, forest, Rain, Fog, birds, Greens allover and sometimes lil scary yet harmless animals is our daily visual diet now. This abundant nature keeps inspiring me as I am in complete awe of this magic called Nature. Our Day starts at Morning 10 ends by whenever we want to, we love our work and so it always keeps us on high enthusiasm.
6. What is your personal favorite pick at MOHA right now? And why
Personal favorite right now is Finger-Rings, esp Double finger ring with granulation…A bold statement piece. I love it most because it was challenging for us while making, we had many trials and errors but we achieved as one beautiful, stunning and well fitting yet comfortable to wear piece.
7. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten along the way in building your business?
Let your emotions not involve in everything you do.
8. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since starting your business?
Looking at finance and money with right understanding, being wise on expenses. Not getting your goal affected by anyone.
9. About Chennai
