By Hand From The Heart is a curated makers market event in Chennai, South India. UPCOMING EVENT: 24th – 25th, AUGUST, CROWNE PLAZA, CHENNAI

Meet The Maker: Neha & Rituparna, Designers, Kaurwaki – style & strength, Bangalore

Meet Neha & Rituparna, designers and founders of Kaurwaki – style & strength a textile design studio based in Bangalore. We chat up with the team about their textile design venture,  inspirations, work space and  what’s life like at Kaurwaki. Here’s their story.

Tell us a bit about you and your design venture.

Hailing from the enigmatic land of Odisha, which is steeped in rich culture and craftsmanship, Neha and Rituparna have been friends since their pre-school days. Both of them pursued different careers post schooling, but their common passion towards creativity and working for their roots brought them together to create their dream venture – ‘Kaurwaki – Style & Strength’.

Kaurwaki – style & strength was officially formed in June 2015. Legends say that Kaurwaki was a fisherman’s daughter from Kalinga (ancient Utkala / Odisha). She was well-known for her strong willpower, passion towards creativity and her individuality. ‘Kaurwaki-style and strength’ aims to reflect such unconventional style and at the same time support & strengthen the rich, age-old craftsmanship of our country.

Your favorite design story.

“Be yourself. The world worships the original” – this maverick expression has been a driving force in our lives since our early days. The insatiable zest to follow this creative vision steered us to form the design house, Kaurwaki – style & strength.

We are keen on exploring native concepts and we enjoy delving into the world of creativity, treasuring our roots. Organic and handwoven fabrics have their own character and originality and have always been the center-stage of Kaurwaki’s clothing line. The natural dyes & colors enhance the uniqueness and elegance of the designs which we aim to create for the everyday woman.

Handmade in India / Make in India – what does this mean to you.

There’s no doubt that India is a repository of talents, timeless art & is surcharged with creative concepts. Any product having the label of ’Make in India’ doesn’t only reflect the technicalities involved in making it but also largely takes into account other integral factors such as skills, efforts, hard work, precision, passion, accuracy & discipline. We value these factors and at the same time we are making our own efforts in preserving & promoting the age old art & craft through our work. The local roots (across the country) have been hugely inspiring. We are  always awe struck with the fresh discoveries & the creative wonders while exploring the creative terrain of our country.

What’ is currently inspiring you.

Every woman who has walked into our studio has always been an inspiration. Their individuality, pristine, confident and unconventional style always give us a fresh perspective for our new creations. Our clients always form a central part of our look-books as well.

Tell us about your team and work studio.

Kaurwaki is being built by the gigantic support of grass root level weavers & artists, unconditional support of family & friends, encouragement & constructive critical analysis from clients/ customers. The team is blessed  with experts & creative geniuses- adding value to the crafty details, technical know-how & edgy clean cuts. And last but not the least we value the brains who help us tab the right opportunities at the right time.

Our work studio has been very well described by one of our valued patrons. In her words,

“ This is a space not unlike Aladdin’s cave, that qualifies as a kaleidoscope of colors & designs at every turn”.  With Love, Mallika

What is a typical day at Kaurwaki like.

Take a look of a typical day we have at Kaurwaki full of challenges but more of fun…

  1. Review of the previous day’s work ( assemble the swatches, review sketches/ drawings, putting it in action/ discussing the specifications with our Masterji (head tailor).
  2. Working on custom-made orders, chalking out the marketing plan for digital marketing, in store promotions, branding/ networking for upcoming shows/ events.

  1. Going over the details of the work in progress
  2. Segregating scraps for our recycling projects
  3. In between tete a tete with clients

  1. Conduct trials & fittings of our creations,
  2. Study trends & documenting our learnings over the day
  3. Final wrap up

Moreover, a lot of travel to remote areas are taken up by the team as & when required. Grueling brainstorming sessions on vendors selection (weavers & artists) design inputs & textile understanding play a major role in our work schedule.
